ACC Summons Former Army Chief Shafiuddin Ahmed Over Corruption Probe

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has summoned former Bangladesh Army chief General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed for questioning in connection with an ongoing investigation into allegations of illegal wealth accumulation through corruption.

In a development reported on Sunday, ACC Deputy Director Md Aktarul Islam confirmed to journalists that General Shafiuddin had been asked to appear before the commission. According to an official letter from the ACC headquarters, the former army chief has been directed to present himself at the commission’s office in Dhaka on September 14, bringing a photocopy of his national identity card (NID).

The notice, issued by ACC Director and investigating officer Md Abul Hasnat, states that an inquiry is being conducted to examine whether General Shafiuddin acquired wealth through irregular financial transactions and corrupt practices. The ACC emphasized that obtaining his formal statement is essential to ensure the fairness and thoroughness of the investigation.

The investigation is being carried out by a two-member team, led by ACC Director Md Abul Hasnat with Deputy Director Mozammel Hossain serving as a member. Both officials have been tasked with completing the inquiry and submitting a detailed report to the commission.

General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, who served as the 17th Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh from June 2018 to June 2021, has been formally requested to cooperate by attending the scheduled hearing and providing a statement regarding the allegations under scrutiny.

As per standard procedure, the ACC has not made any further public comments on the ongoing probe. The case reflects the commission’s ongoing efforts to investigate high-profile individuals for alleged financial improprieties and abuse of power.
