Climate Change Accelerates Nepal Floods, Threatening Millions in Himalayas
Deadly flash floods in Nepal, triggered by glacial collapse, highlight climate change risks. Scientists warn 15M people face threats from melting glaciers and unstable permafrost.

Deadly flash floods on the border of Nepal and Chinese‑administered Tibet have killed dozens and destroyed dozens of villages, officials said on Tuesday. Scientists say the sudden surge of water and debris was triggered by a massive collapse of a glacier in the Himalayan river valley, an event that is becoming more common as global temperatures rise.
The floods came from a glacier that, according to preliminary reports, snapped off and slid down the valley as a torrent of ice, rock, mud and water. The avalanche of debris surged downstream, inundating communities along the river and leaving many residents dead or missing. The scale of the disaster was evident in videos posted by locals, showing a wall of water and rubble that swept through villages in minutes.
Climate scientists have warned that glacier collapse is a growing threat in the Himalayas. The region’s glaciers, once stable for thousands of years, are now melting at an accelerated pace driven by human‑caused climate change. “These glaciers that were once stable are disappearing,” said Julia Simon, NPR’s climate correspondent. “The glacier had melted, and glacial lake floods are a growing threat. In recent years, multiple glacial lake floods have displaced and killed people. Scientists warn that an estimated 15 million people around the world are at risk from such floods.”
The flood’s timing is not a surprise to experts. NPR has reported on Nepal’s glaciers for years. In 2022, a team from the network climbed a moraine—a pile of boulders left by a glacier—only to find a lake where a glacier should have been. “Oh, wow,” said Rebecca Hersher, one of the reporters, when she reached the top of the moraine and heard the sound of water. “There was only water—this huge lake—where a glacier should have been.”
The rapid melting of glaciers is tied to the loss of permafrost, the permanently frozen soil and rock that has held mountain slopes together for millennia. Alton Byers, a researcher at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research at the University of Colorado Boulder, explained the process: “The analogy I and my colleagues use is take a stick of butter out of the refrigerator and put it on the counter. It’s going to get softer, and it’s going to lose its structural integrity.” Byers said he is surprised at how quickly the permafrost is changing, which makes mountain slopes increasingly unstable.
The floods also highlight the limits of Nepal’s existing warning systems. Officials say the country’s flood‑warning infrastructure was not equipped to handle the sudden, large‑scale event, despite significant investment over the last decade. “Better alert systems are needed,” said Simon. “It seems right now, like Nepal’s flood warning system wasn’t equipped to handle this.” She added that the primary driver of global warming is the burning of fossil fuels—oil, gas and coal—and that solutions to transition away from those energy sources are available, affordable and reliable. Solar power, wind energy and battery storage were cited as scalable options.
The Nepal floods underscore a broader pattern of climate‑related disasters in the Himalayan region. As temperatures continue to climb, glacial melt and permafrost thaw are expected to increase the frequency and severity of flash floods, landslides and debris flows. Scientists and policy makers emphasize that addressing the root cause—global warming—will be essential to reducing the risk to millions of people who live in the shadow of the world’s tallest mountains.
