India's August GST collections near ₹2 lakh crore, up 14.8% YoY
India's GST collections in August 2026 reached ₹1,99,853 crore, marking a 14.8% YoY increase despite higher refunds, reflecting economic resilience.

India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections in August 2026 approached ₹2 lakh crore, a 14.8 percent year‑on‑year rise, according to data released by the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday. Net collections after refunds of ₹31.8 crore stood at ₹1.68 lakh crore, up 8.3 percent from ₹1.55 lakh crore in August 2025. The increase comes despite a 68 percent annualised jump in refunds and higher imports, reflecting the country’s economic resilience and effective tax compliance.
The gross GST haul for August 2026 was ₹1.998 lakh crore, compared with ₹1.741 lakh crore in August 2025. Net collections after refunds of ₹31.8 lakh crore were ₹1.680 lakh crore, versus ₹1.551 lakh crore a year earlier, while refunds in August 2025 were ₹1.893 lakh crore. The data show that monthly collections have now stabilised around the ₹2 lakh crore mark following the 2025 rate rationalisation.
The 56th meeting of the GST Council, held on 3 September 2025, introduced a simplified two‑slab structure of 5 percent and 18 percent, with a special 40 percent rate for luxury and sin goods from 22 September. The Council, the apex federal body on indirect tax, meets annually and is chaired by the Union Finance Minister with state finance ministers as members. The 57th meeting, scheduled for 12 September in New Delhi, will review the impact of the new rates and consider proposals to ease compliance.
Abhishek Jain, partner and national head of Indirect Tax at KPMG India, said the 14.8 percent growth in overall GST collections “adds to the cheer of 7.8 percent GDP growth in Q1, showing the robustness of the Indian economy despite geopolitical conflicts and global uncertainty.” He added that the steady collections point to effective enforcement and growing taxpayer confidence.
The Finance Ministry’s data also highlighted a significant increase in refunds, a trend that has been a focus of the GST Council’s recent discussions. While the higher refunds have temporarily dampened net collections, the overall upward trajectory suggests that the tax framework is working as intended.
Analysts note that the recent rate rationalisation has reduced compliance complexity, and the government’s next priority is to streamline processes and further ease the doing‑business environment. The GST Council’s decisions are typically unanimous, underscoring a collective commitment to refining India’s indirect tax system.
The Ministry’s release comes amid broader efforts to strengthen fiscal discipline, as highlighted by the Comptroller and Auditor General’s latest audit of GST administration. The audit flagged lapses and called for tighter controls, a point that the GST Council is expected to address in its upcoming meeting.
With the GST collections nearing the ₹2 lakh crore threshold, India’s indirect tax revenue is on a solid growth path, reinforcing confidence among investors and policymakers alike.
