Israeli Strike in Southern Lebanon Kills Newlywed Woman, Injures Six

An Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon killed a newlywed woman and injured six others, including a child and two elderly individuals, on Thursday. The attack targeted the town of Arab Salim in the Nabatieh district, according to Lebanese authorities.

Lebanon’s Ministry of Health confirmed the casualties, while the state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported that the deceased woman had been married for just 48 hours. Her home was destroyed in the strike. Lebanese security sources said at least 10 Israeli strikes hit the broader Nabatieh area, with additional artillery shelling reported near Rashaf in the Bint Jbeil district.

The Israeli military stated it conducted the strikes in response to an attack by the Iran-backed group Hezbollah, which it said launched explosive drones at Israeli soldiers in the Ali al-Taher ridge overnight. No Israeli casualties were reported. The military claimed it targeted Hezbollah weapon storage facilities.

Tensions between Israel and Lebanon have escalated since the start of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza in October 2023. Hezbollah began launching attacks on northern Israel in solidarity with Palestinian factions, prompting Israeli retaliatory strikes. Lebanese authorities report that more than 4,300 people have been killed in the conflict.

Recent days have seen an increase in Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon. On August 15, Israeli strikes killed 11 people, including several children, according to Lebanese officials. Israel described those raids as retaliation for a Hezbollah attack.

While violence has decreased following diplomatic efforts, including a U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding and a June framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel, concerns remain about further escalation. The framework agreement outlines a phased Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon in exchange for the deployment of the Lebanese army and the disarmament of armed groups, including Hezbollah.

The latest strikes have reignited debate in Beirut over the effectiveness of the agreement and the potential for broader conflict. Observers note that contested areas, such as the strategic high ground near Nabatieh, remain flashpoints in the ongoing hostilities.
