Karnataka Cabinet Forms Panel to Review Criminal Case Withdrawals

The Karnataka government has formed a six-member ministerial sub-committee to review criminal cases pending in state courts and recommend withdrawals where appropriate. Chaired by Home Minister Priyank Kharge, the panel includes Social Welfare Minister K. H. Muniyappa, Health and Family Welfare Minister U.T. Khader, Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, Municipal Administration Minister H. C. Balakrishna, and Urban Development Minister Dr. Yathindra Siddaramaiah.

This review initiative targets cases currently before various courts across Karnataka, with the committee tasked to assess each case’s nature, background, and legal context before submitting recommendations for withdrawal. The process will follow applicable state procedures and rules governing case withdrawal.

According to the government order, the sub-committee will evaluate whether withdrawal is justified based on the merits of each case. Upon completion, it will forward eligible recommendations to the State Cabinet for final approval. The move is expected to reduce judicial backlog and streamline the handling of lower-level or politically sensitive cases.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has emphasized the government’s focus on justice reform and reducing unnecessary litigation burdens on the judiciary. Home Minister Priyank Kharge stated that the committee will ensure transparency and adherence to legal norms throughout the review process.

Legal experts have noted that while case withdrawal is permitted under the Code of Criminal Procedure, it requires strict adherence to guidelines to prevent misuse. The committee’s work may also impact public perception of law enforcement and judicial efficiency in Karnataka.

The sub-committee is expected to submit its initial report within two months, after which the State government will take further action based on the recommendations.
