Krishna Byre Gowda inspects solid waste management system

Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda conducted an unannounced inspection of Bengaluru’s solid waste management system Monday morning, urging officials to tighten door-to-door collection and improve segregation at source. Accompanied by Bengaluru North City Corporation (BNCC) Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar, the minister toured areas under the North Corporation’s jurisdiction, including Mallasandra, Dasarahalli, and Jalahalli, to assess compliance with waste-handling rules.

The inspection began at 5:30 a.m. at the Mallasandra Auto Mustering Point in Dasarahalli. Gowda reviewed attendance records for drivers and helpers, verified the operation of waste collection autos, and checked scanning devices. At a second mustering point, he evaluated attendance, uniform standards, glove use, and overall sanitation worker performance. He also met with pourakarmikas to hear first-hand reports on challenges in the field.

Moving to Mallasandra and Jalahalli wards, Gowda examined door-to-door collection practices, focusing on whether households were separating wet and dry waste at home. He observed road cleanliness levels and instructed sanitation teams to collect waste left at gates when residents were away, rather than waiting for residents to hand it over directly. He advised residents traveling during collection hours to place segregated waste outside their gates in a designated spot, ensuring it was secure from stray animals. Where homes lacked gates or compounds, Gowda suggested placing waste on elevated surfaces or wall-mounted railings to prevent scattering.

The minister also toured poorly maintained vacant sites and directed BNCC officials to issue cleanup notices to owners and ensure immediate remediation. The surprise inspection underscored the state government’s push for stricter enforcement of solid waste management rules under the Swachh Bharat Mission framework.

Gowda’s visit follows repeated public complaints about irregular collection, inadequate segregation, and littered public spaces in Bengaluru’s northern zones. The BNCC has pledged to escalate monitoring and penalize non-compliance to improve citywide cleanliness.
