Man Arrested in Kells Hit‑and‑Run That Killed Cyclist TJ McDonnell

A man in his 30s was arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident in Kells, County Meath, that resulted in the death of 19-year-old cyclist TJ McDonnell. The tragedy occurred on Tuesday evening at Nugentstown, near Kells, when McDonnell, who was training for an Ironman event, was struck by a van while cycling with a friend. The driver fled the scene, but a 30-something-year-old man was detained by Gardaí the following day and questioned at a local station. He has since been released without charge, and authorities are preparing a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
TJ McDonnell, from Bohermeen in County Meath, was a dedicated cyclist and Gaelic football player. He was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency services arrived. A postmortem examination was conducted at Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan to determine the exact cause of death.
Bohermeen Cycling Club issued a statement expressing deep condolences to McDonnell’s family. “Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time,” the club wrote on social media, reflecting the shock and grief felt by the local cycling community.
An Garda Síochána confirmed that the investigation remains active, urging anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident to come forward. The case has drawn significant attention, particularly among cycling and sports communities in County Meath, where McDonnell was well-known for his athletic pursuits.
The fatal collision has also raised concerns about road safety, especially for cyclists, prompting calls for increased awareness and enforcement to prevent similar tragedies. Local authorities and cycling groups are expected to continue advocating for safer infrastructure for cyclists in the region.
Gardaí have not yet released further details about the suspect or the van involved, stating that their inquiry is still in progress.
