Maratha quota: Maharastra Govt hints at willingness to discuss ‘legally valid’ demands

The Maharashtra government has signaled its openness to discussing the Maratha community’s demands while navigating legal constraints, as activists continue pressing for caste-based reservations. On the second day of a hunger strike launched by Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange in Jalna district, state leaders indicated they would engage with constitutionally valid requests. Jarange, who has set a September 12 deadline for the government to respond, remains firm on securing Kunbi caste certificates for Marathas, a key demand tied to reservation benefits.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reiterated that the government will only consider demands consistent with Supreme Court rulings, emphasizing legality over political pressure. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, a prominent Maratha leader, addressed a rally in Parbhani, affirming the state’s commitment to justice for the community. Jarange, however, criticized the event as unnecessary political posturing, leading to minor police detentions at the venue.

Jarange’s protest centers on his claim that 58 lakh Maratha-Kunbi genealogical records exist, which he says the government is attempting to reduce. His primary demand is formal Kunbi recognition for Marathas to access education and government job quotas reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBCs). Additional demands include the withdrawal of police cases against quota protesters and compensation for families of those who died during past agitations.

Fadnavis stated that state representatives are engaging with protesters to address their concerns, pointing to past efforts to resolve Maratha quota issues. Shinde, who has long supported the community’s demands, framed the rally as a show of solidarity with farmers rather than a political maneuver. The government’s cautious approach reflects the legal complexities surrounding reservation policies, particularly after the Supreme Court struck down the 102nd Constitutional Amendment in 2021, which had granted states independent powers to identify backward classes.

As the standoff continues, Jarange has warned of mass protests in Mumbai if the government fails to meet his demands by the deadline. The situation underscores the ongoing tensions between Maratha aspirations for reservation and the legal frameworks governing affirmative action in India.
