KATHMANDU, Nepal — Devastating floods swept through central Nepal on August 26, 2026, after a massive avalanche triggered a glacial lake outburst, killing at least 160 people and leaving hundreds missing. The disaster, one of the deadliest in recent years, highlights growing climate-related risks in the Himalayas.

The disaster began when a 4.4 magnitude earthquake near the Nepal-China border triggered an avalanche on Mount Langtang Lirung. The debris blocked the Lhende Khola river, creating a temporary lake that burst, sending a torrent of water, mud, and boulders downstream. Satellite imagery from Planet Labs suggests the flood originated near the border before racing into Nepal’s Trisuli River valley.

Authorities report that at least six hydropower plants, transmission lines, and substations were destroyed, cutting off power to thousands. Multiple bridges were swept away, isolating communities along the Trisuli and Bhote Kosi rivers. The flooding also buried a major solar power plant in Nuwakot under sediment.

The death toll is expected to rise, with floating debris and animal carcasses spotted as far as 200 kilometers downstream in Nawalparasi district. Officials have not yet confirmed a final count, but preliminary assessments suggest hundreds remain missing.

Scientists remain divided on the cause of the avalanche. While the earthquake may have loosened an unstable glacier, some experts argue the avalanche itself may have triggered the seismic activity. The disaster occurred during the tail end of monsoon season, when heavy snow and saturated moraines—left behind by retreating glaciers—made slopes particularly vulnerable.

This flood is part of a troubling trend in the Himalayas. Recent disasters, including the 2021 Chamoli flood, 2023 Sikkim flood, and 2025 Bhote Kosi event, have been linked to glacial retreat, permafrost melt, and unstable moraines. Many of these incidents happened during monsoon season, raising concerns about increasing climate-related risks.

Last year’s Rasuwagadhi flood, which killed 18 people and destroyed critical infrastructure, was traced to collapsing supraglacial ponds. Unlike that event, no warnings were issued ahead of this year’s disaster, despite its closer proximity to the Nepal-China border.

Nepal’s new government, led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah, faces immediate challenges in search and rescue operations, as well as long-term recovery efforts. The disaster also underscores Nepal’s push for international climate funding, as the country grapples with billions in damages from climate-induced disasters.

Environmental activists argue that major polluting nations, including the U.S. and China, should contribute to the "Loss and Damage" fund established in global climate negotiations. The fund aims to address economic losses faced by vulnerable mountain countries like Nepal.

As Nepal assesses the destruction, experts warn that similar disasters will likely increase due to climate change. The government will need to develop stronger disaster preparedness strategies to mitigate future risks.

The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the interconnected challenges posed by seismic activity and climate change in the Himalayas. With lives lost and infrastructure destroyed, Nepal now faces a daunting path to recovery.
