Nepal Flood Survivors Camp: Heartbreaking Search for Missing Loved Ones

A rescue and relief camp in Nuwakot district, central Nepal, has become a focal point for survivors and families searching for missing loved ones after devastating flash floods and landslides struck the Nepal-Tibet border region.

More than 400 people have been confirmed dead in the disaster, according to official figures, though the toll is expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue.

At the army-run camp, survivors and relatives queue in distress, hoping for news of those still unaccounted for. One woman, rescued by the Nepali Army, cradles an infant while weeping uncontrollably. Her husband, father, and mother remain missing. Her trauma is evident, her grief raw and unfiltered.

Nearby, an injured driver from Rasuwa describes how floodwaters threw him into the water. Though he survived, he is overwhelmed by loss—more than 20 friends perished in the disaster. When approached for comment, he is visibly shaken, unable to focus, tears streaming down his face.

Emergency medical teams are treating the wounded as helicopters land and take off every hour. Each arrival brings a flicker of hope—families scan the aircraft, searching faces for any sign of missing relatives. One elderly woman, airlifted for treatment, collapses upon arrival and later dies. The scene is deeply distressing.

Nepal’s government has deployed at least 12 helicopters to assist in search and rescue operations, officials confirm. Yet communication remains a challenge—after leaving the camp, journalists struggle to file reports due to poor internet connectivity, forcing a three-hour drive back to Kathmandu.

“I’ve covered disasters in Nepal before,” said one reporter who witnessed the aftermath, “but this is one of the most devastating I’ve ever seen.” Despite the emotional burden, journalists continue their work, documenting the crisis as it unfolds.
