Oslo mayor cancels own wedding after death of Norway's king

The mayor of Oslo, Anne Lindboe, has postponed her wedding to her fiancé, Pål Sandvid, after the death of Norway’s King Harald V. The ceremony, scheduled for Friday, was cancelled when the monarch died early that day at the national hospital in Oslo, where he was receiving treatment for a rare blood disorder. The mayor confirmed the decision in a statement to the BBC and posted a tribute to the late king on Instagram, saying, “It’s hard to imagine an Oslo and a Norway without you. You didn’t need a crowd to be King.” No new date has been set for the wedding.

Harald V’s death marked the end of a 35‑year reign that began in 1991. He passed away at the age of 72, a day before the anniversary of his own wedding. His son, Prince Haakon, has since been proclaimed King Haakon VIII and will take the throne on Friday. Lindboe and Sandvid were engaged in June of this year, after five years of partnership. The late king was widely regarded as a modernising force within the Norwegian monarchy. He broke with tradition by marrying commoner Queen Sonja in 1968 and was celebrated for his role as a unifying figure during times of national crisis. His reign was marked by efforts to bring the monarchy closer to the people, and he was often described as a “man of the people.” In the days following his death, crowds gathered outside the Royal Palace to lay flowers and pay respects.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre addressed the nation in a televised memorial, describing the country as “united in grief and gratitude” for Harald’s service and stating that “his legacy lives on.” International reactions included a statement from Britain’s King Charles III, who said he was mourning his “dear cousin.” Harald was a second cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, and the new king, Haakon VIII, is a great‑great‑great grandson of Queen Victoria.

The mayor’s tribute on Instagram also reflected the deep personal loss felt by many Norwegians, noting that “Even the majority of Norwegians who never met you in person still felt like they knew you.” Her message was shared widely on social media and received thousands of comments from citizens expressing condolences and admiration for the former king’s legacy.
