Pinarayi accuses Taliparamba MLA of ‘betrayal’

Kerala's political landscape remains tense after the recent Assembly election defeat in Taliparamba, a traditional stronghold of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M). Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday, August 31, 2026, accused former CPI(M) leader and independent MLA T.K. Govindan of betraying the party and contributing to its poll loss in the constituency. Vijayan made these remarks while addressing a CPI(M) rally in Taliparamba where party leaders discussed their performance in the recent elections.

T.K. Govindan had left the CPI(M) after disagreeing with the party's decision to field State secretary M.V. Govindan's wife, P.K. Shyamala, as the candidate for Taliparamba. Contesting as an independent with United Democratic Front (UDF) support, Govindan defeated the CPI(M) candidate, handing the party a significant setback in what was once a safe seat.

Vijayan attributed the Left Democratic Front (LDF) coalition's defeat to a sharp decline in vote share, which fell over 11% compared to the 2021 elections. "The reason for our defeat is that we lost more than 11% votes compared to the ones we received in 2021. This is what led to the defeat," he stated. He further alleged that Govindan's candidacy diverted some votes away from the LDF. "When T.K. Govindan came as a candidate, it can be seen that following that candidacy, a few votes were lost from the LDF," Vijayan said.

The CPI(M) leader expressed disappointment that long-time supporters of the party had taken a different stance during the election. "The fact that a lot of people who stood with the CPI(M) at all stages thought differently at this stage was something that should not have happened," he remarked. Vijayan called for introspection among those who abandoned the party, emphasizing that recognizing mistakes is essential for correction.

Govindan, in response, criticized the CPI(M) leadership, alleging that it prioritized personal interests over the party's well-being. "The leadership is destroying this party for your own selfish interests. To you, the party is not what matters most; your other spin-off deals are what matter to you," he said. Govindan also questioned whether the leadership was honestly analyzing the reasons behind the party's decline. "Are you impartially examining why the party has fallen into such a state?" he asked, adding, "If you attack V. Kunhikrishnan (Payyannur MLA) and me, will this party be saved?"

He further referenced the 2012 killing of Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader T.P. Chandrasekharan, who left the CPI(M) to form his own party. Govindan questioned whether such actions had strengthened the CPI(M), suggesting a deeper crisis within the party.
