Rob Reiner’s son Jake gives first interview after parents’ deaths: ‘I will never understand why this happened’

Jake Reiner, the 35‑year‑old son of film director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, gave his first interview since his parents were found dead in their Los Angeles home in December. In the interview with KABC, he said he “will never understand why this happened” and described the shock that followed the discovery of his father’s body by his sister, Romy Reiner, who lived across the street.

Rob Reiner, known for directing The Princess Bride, This Is Spinal Tap and Stand By Me, was found dead with his wife from apparent stab wounds. Their 32‑year‑old son, Nick Reiner, has been indicted on two counts of first‑degree murder and has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he could face the death penalty, though prosecutors have not yet indicated whether they will seek capital punishment. Nick’s pre‑trial hearing is scheduled for September 15.

Reiner said that after hearing from his sister, who called 911, he went into shock. “Romy told me our dad was dead, and then she said, ‘I can’t find mom,’” he told the station. “I immediately went into shock.” He added that his parents “had unconditional love for all three of us” and that he could not understand the tragedy, regardless of how it is explained.

The interview also revealed that Reiner has lost his parents and his brother, who is currently in jail, leaving him and his sister to navigate the aftermath alone. “It’s like, I physically lost my parents, and then Nick was arrested, now it’s just me and Romy, and we have to navigate this by ourselves essentially,” he said. He described his emotional response as anger and rage, stating that the unfairness of the situation and his lack of control over the events are “infuriating.”

Reiner declined to say whether he would speak with his brother in the future, noting that he had not spoken with Nick since the incident. He also highlighted that his parents had “never stopped helping” Nick with his struggles with addiction and mental health. Nick wrote the 2015 film Being Charlie, which Rob directed and was loosely based on Nick’s life.

In a Substack essay published in April, Reiner described the deaths as “almost too impossible to process” and a “living nightmare.” He reflected on the difficulty of grieving the loss of parents in such a violent manner, noting that the eight months since the incident feel both like “eight years” and “eight minutes” because the reality of the loss remains present in every moment.

The case has also raised questions about financial matters. Nick has attempted to access $1.6 million in a trust his parents set up for him as a child to pay legal fees. The trust’s professional fiduciary and trustees have blocked his access, citing California’s slayer statute, which prohibits individuals accused of killing from benefiting from the estate of their victim.

Michele Singer Reiner, a former model and actress, was also a prominent figure in the Los Angeles arts community.
