Sunday Night Futures
The stock market is poised for a lower opening on Monday as futures contracts indicate declines across major indices. S&P 500 futures were down 16 points, while Dow Jones Industrial Average futures fell 104 points in pre-market trading, according to CNBC data and Bloomberg futures. No major economic releases are scheduled for Monday, January 11, 2026.
Oil prices have risen over the past week, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures trading at $59.37 per barrel and Brent crude at $63.60 per barrel. Despite this weekly increase, both benchmarks remain significantly lower than a year ago. WTI is down approximately 24% from $77 per barrel last year, while Brent has decreased from $80 per barrel to $63.60.
Gasoline prices nationwide have also declined year-over-year. According to Gasbuddy.com data, the average price per gallon in the U.S. is $2.74, a decrease of 29 cents from $3.03 per gallon one year ago.
The weekly economic calendar includes no major data releases on Monday. Markets will be closed for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on Monday, which may contribute to reduced trading volume.
Investors will be monitoring geopolitical developments and any shifts in monetary policy expectations as they assess market sentiment. Oil prices have been volatile in recent months due to fluctuating global demand and supply dynamics, while gasoline prices have followed crude oil trends lower.
The pre-market futures data suggests a cautious start to the week, with equities under pressure before the holiday-shortened trading session. Market participants will be looking for direction as the week progresses, particularly with earnings season approaching for major corporations.
