Trump Threatens 'Hard' Strike on Iran After Fresh Clashes in Hormuz

Donald Trump warned the United States would “hit Iran hard” after the first exchange of fire in weeks, following U.S. strikes on the Iranian island of Larak in the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s missile and drone attacks on U.S. targets in West Asia. The incident marked a sharp escalation in a six‑month conflict that has seen Iran close the strategic Strait of Hormuz and the U.S. enforce a counter‑blockade on Iranian ports.

The U.S. attack on Larak, conducted on Sunday, was aimed at destroying Iranian rocket launchers that Tehran claimed would be used to plant mines in the key shipping lane. State media reported that three people were killed and several others wounded. In response, Iran launched missiles and drones at U.S. forces in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, claiming the strikes targeted American personnel and assets. The Revolutionary Guards said the ballistic missile attack on two U.S. air bases in Jordan caused “heavy damage,” while Jordan’s army reported intercepting eight missiles, without confirming their source.

Trump’s comment, relayed by a Fox News reporter, came after the U.S. had said all missiles fired at American forces were shot down, except one deemed harmless. He reiterated that the United States would respond to Iranian aggression, adding that the Treasury Secretary would continue a pressure campaign aimed at hobbling Tehran’s economy.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, speaking at a G20 meeting in North Carolina, confirmed that the U.S. would keep exerting economic pressure on Iran. “We are going to continue exerting pressure, and we’ve had very good discussions here already,” Bessent told reporters. He said a turning point in the campaign could arrive “within weeks or months,” underscoring Washington’s shift to “economic warfare” after the exchange of fire.

Iran’s leadership has called for dialogue amid the escalation. President Masoud Pezeshkian, addressing a summit in Kyrgyzstan on Monday, said, “We continue to strive for a path of agreement and understanding, and we believe that continuing the war is neither in our interest, nor in the interest of the region.” He added that “the solution to the existing problems is dialogue and cooperation.” Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urged the United States to return to its commitments, stating, “The solution is completely clear and straightforward: the United States must return to its commitments.”

The Strait of Hormuz remains a flashpoint, with Iran insisting it controls the waterway and the U.S. claiming “total control.” The U.S. navy last week announced it had cleared explosives from the strait, but Iranian Revolutionary Guards said a “rogue” oil tanker caught fire after hitting two mines while attempting to transit an “illegal route.” The U.S. military dismissed the claim as disinformation, noting no ships had hit mines in the strait.

A tanker leaving the strait reported being hit by three “unknown projectiles” just off the northeastern edge of Oman, according to the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations agency. The incident did not cause environmental damage or casualties, but it highlighted the ongoing risk to commercial shipping.

Regional actors have reacted cautiously. Abu Dhabi said it intercepted a drone over its waters but dismissed claims that Al Minhad Air Base had been targeted as “baseless.” Jordan’s army confirmed the interception of missiles, while the UAE’s authorities said they had shot down an American drone over Hormuz.

Mediation efforts have stalled after an earlier truce and memorandum of understanding fell apart. The United States and Iran have struggled to find a lasting resolution, with economic sanctions and military posturing driving global oil markets and influencing voter sentiment in the U.S. midterm election year.

The latest flare‑up raises concerns that the conflict could spiral into broader hostilities. Washington’s threat to “hit Iran hard” and Iran’s retaliatory attacks underscore the fragile balance that keeps the region from a larger war. Both sides remain poised, with the international community watching closely as the U.S. Treasury continues to apply financial pressure and Iran seeks to secure its strategic interests in the Gulf.
