US Lawmakers Criticize RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat's New York Visit

US lawmakers criticize Mohan Bhagwat’s New York visit amid concerns over RSS ideology

New York, Sept 23 – Two prominent US Democrats, Representative Rashida Tlaib and Representative Jim McGovern, have criticized the visit of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat to New York, citing concerns over the organization’s alleged history of promoting discrimination and violence against religious minorities in India.

Tlaib, in a post on X, stated that Bhagwat and his “Hindu nationalist ideology” were “not welcome” in American communities. She described the RSS as a paramilitary organization responsible for violent attacks and pogroms against Muslims, Sikhs, Dalits, Christians, and others. “We must reject all forms of hate and supremacy,” she added.

McGovern, another Democratic representative, echoed these concerns in a separate post on X. Referring to comments by former US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) chairs Stephen Schneck and Nadine Maenza, McGovern said the RSS had contributed to making “discrimination and violence against religious minorities mainstream in India.” He emphasized that Bhagwat should face accountability rather than be given a platform.

The criticism follows Bhagwat’s address at the ‘Universal Oneness Celebration’ held at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. The event, organized by the American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD) forum, drew over 5,000 attendees and featured cultural performances, music, and artistic presentations.

In his speech, Bhagwat emphasized the principles of unity, diversity, and human interconnectedness. He stated, “Whenever you think of America, one word is often discussed — pluralism. When we say Bharat, another phrase is discussed — unity in diversity. For Bharat, both unity and diversity are in its DNA.”

Bhagwat also addressed the concept of ‘Dharma,’ clarifying that it should not be understood merely as religion or worship. He described Dharma as the sustaining principle of the universe and a framework for managing life’s dualities. He further noted that human beings are distinct from animals due to their capacity for reason and moral judgment.

The RSS, founded in 1925, is a right-wing, nationalist volunteer organization based in India. It has been a subject of debate both domestically and internationally, with critics alleging links to Hindu nationalism and instances of sectarian violence. Supporters, however, view it as a cultural and social organization promoting national unity and values.

Bhagwat’s visit to New York has reignited discussions about the global perception of the RSS and its ideological stance. While the event focused on themes of oneness and inclusivity, the public statements from US lawmakers highlight ongoing concerns regarding religious freedom and minority rights in India.
