Volvo details CarPlay update that adds Spatial Audio feature for three models

Volvo has confirmed that its latest software update will add Spatial Audio support to Apple CarPlay on the EX90, the EX60 and the ES90. The new feature uses Dolby Atmos technology and requires the Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system that comes with those models, which includes 25 high‑performance speakers. The update allows drivers to experience multi‑dimensional, immersive sound that places music and vocals around the cabin, making every drive feel richer and more engaging.

The announcement follows an earlier January statement in which Volvo pledged continued support for Apple CarPlay, even as other automakers such as General Motors scaled back the feature in some of their vehicles. At that time, Volvo had already indicated that the EX60 SUV would receive Spatial Audio through CarPlay, and the company has now expanded that promise to the EX90 and ES90.

Volvo’s spokesperson said that Spatial Audio in CarPlay requires the Bowers & Wilkins system to deliver a fully immersive experience. Buyers can select the Bowers & Wilkins option when ordering the EX60, EX90 or ES90. The feature will work with any content that supports Spatial Audio, including Apple Music tracks, live performances and podcasts, and it is expected to add depth and detail to all audio played through the vehicle’s infotainment system.

The update also brings Spatial Audio to the EX90’s CarPlay interface, which is powered by Dolby Atmos. According to Volvo, the technology will place sound throughout the cabin, creating a more realistic listening environment that enhances the overall driving experience. While the company did not provide a specific release date, the software update is expected to roll out in the coming months as part of the vehicle’s regular firmware releases.

In addition to the official update, Pioneer has already launched an aftermarket CarPlay system that supports Spatial Audio playback via Dolby Atmos. The system, introduced earlier this year, allows owners of compatible vehicles to add the feature without purchasing a new car. The aftermarket solution uses a dedicated CarPlay adapter and a Bowers & Wilkins‑style speaker configuration to deliver the immersive audio experience.

Volvo’s move comes as automakers increasingly integrate advanced audio technologies into their vehicles. Apple’s own Spatial Audio feature, which was introduced for the iPhone and iPad in 2020, uses Dolby Atmos to create a surround‑sound effect that places audio sources around the listener. By extending this capability to CarPlay, Volvo is aligning its in‑car entertainment with Apple’s broader ecosystem.

The company’s commitment to CarPlay also follows the broader industry trend of embracing connected car platforms. Apple CarPlay allows drivers to access maps, music, messaging and other apps from the vehicle’s infotainment screen. With the addition of Spatial Audio, Volvo is aiming to enhance the quality of the audio experience, a key differentiator for luxury brands.

Volvo has not disclosed whether the Spatial Audio update will be available on all trim levels of the affected models or only on higher‑end configurations that include the Bowers & Wilkins system. The company also has not announced any additional hardware requirements beyond the existing speaker array.

Consumers who already own a Volvo EX90, EX60 or ES90 can expect the Spatial Audio feature to become available through a future software update, which will be delivered via the vehicle’s over‑the‑air (OTA) update system. The update will likely include other bug fixes and performance improvements in addition to the new audio capability.

In summary, Volvo is expanding its CarPlay support to include Spatial Audio on three of its models, using Dolby Atmos and the Bowers & Wilkins sound system to deliver immersive audio. The feature will be delivered through a software update, with availability expected in the next few months. The move follows Volvo’s earlier commitment to CarPlay and reflects the growing importance of advanced audio technologies in the automotive market.
