Yellow-status rain warning comes into effect for entire country

A nationwide yellow-status rain warning has taken effect across Ireland, prompting concerns over potential flooding and travel disruptions as Met Éireann forecasts widespread heavy showers, thunderstorms, and possible hail through Sunday evening.

The warning, active from noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday, covers all counties as damp conditions overshadow outdoor activities, including the third day of the Electric Picnic music festival in Stradbally, County Laois. The festival, already dealing with wet weather, faces further challenges with localised flooding, poor visibility, and lightning risks highlighted by the national meteorological service.

Met Éireann has advised the public to prepare for difficult driving conditions, with gusty winds accompanying heavy downpours. While temperatures will reach 16 to 21 degrees during the day, occasional sunny breaks may offer brief relief. By evening, conditions will turn breezy, with scattered showers gradually easing overnight as clearer skies emerge. Overnight lows are expected to range between 10 and 14 degrees.

Monday is set to begin more settled, with dry spells and sunshine early on, particularly in southeastern counties like Wexford and Waterford. However, cloud cover will increase from the west by morning, bringing rain later in the afternoon. Temperatures will dip slightly, reaching highs of 14 to 19 degrees—cooler than recent days.

The unsettled pattern is expected to persist into next week, with further showers or prolonged rain forecast daily. Residents and event organisers are urged to stay updated on weather alerts as Met Éireann continues to monitor conditions.
