2 held in Manipur after body parts of woman found in train from TN

Police in Manipur and Tamil Nadu have arrested a couple in connection with the murder of a 38-year-old woman whose dismembered body parts were found in a suitcase on a Delhi-bound train last month.

Authorities identified the suspects as Manik Uddin Laskar, 22, from Assam’s Cachar district, and his wife Bhagabati Majhi, also known as Ayesha Begum, 21, originally from Odisha’s Kendujhar district. A joint operation by Tamil Nadu and Manipur police led to their arrests in Jiribam district, Manipur, on August 28 and 29. The accused were handed over to Tamil Nadu police for further legal proceedings.

The case began on August 5 when passengers on the Tamil Nadu Express reported a foul odor from a red trolley suitcase in an unreserved compartment after the train reached Agra. Railway police recovered a headless, dismembered body from the suitcase. Tamil Nadu police, led by Superintendent P Rajan of the Chennai Government Railway Police, traced the couple after reviewing over 350 surveillance camera recordings from Chennai Central railway station.

The victim was later identified through forensic examination and DNA analysis as Hayathun Nisha, a resident of Odisha. Police said the couple had stayed at Nisha’s residence in Guduvanchery, Tamil Nadu, and were acquainted with her for years. A missing-person complaint filed by Nisha’s son led authorities to raid a rented house on Mosque Street in Guduvanchery, where additional body parts were recovered from a large cooking vessel.

Investigators believe the crime may have been motivated by an alleged illicit relationship between Manik and Nisha. After placing the suitcase on the train on August 3, the couple fled to Manipur, where they were later arrested.

Tamil Nadu police have converted the missing-person case into a murder investigation and continue to probe the motive behind the crime.
