Amy Goodman Shares Skin Cancer Recovery, Urges Annual Derm Checks
Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman discusses her squamous cell cancer diagnosis and recovery, emphasizing the importance of regular dermatology checks amid rising skin cancer rates.

Amy Goodman, host of *Democracy Now!*, returned to the airwaves this week following a medical procedure to remove skin cancer from her nose. Goodman disclosed her absence and recovery in an on-air update, emphasizing the importance of skin cancer awareness and regular dermatological checkups.
Goodman underwent Mohs surgery, a precise procedure to remove squamous cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer. The surgery, conducted under local anesthesia, was described as painless and successful. Goodman removed her stitches the day before returning to the show, though she still had Steri-Strips—a type of adhesive bandage—across the bridge of her nose. She noted that her medical team confirmed the removal of all cancerous cells, with clear margins.
In her remarks, Goodman acknowledged the support of her colleagues at *Democracy Now!*, including co-host Juan González, editorial director Mike Burke, and other staff members who ensured the show continued in her absence. Goodman also expressed gratitude for the care she received, noting that catching the cancer early was crucial.
Goodman urged listeners to prioritize their health, highlighting that skin abnormalities such as spots, bumps, moles, or rough patches could indicate skin cancer. She stressed the importance of annual dermatology visits, particularly amid rising skin cancer rates linked to climate change and increased sun exposure. Goodman also referenced elevated skin cancer cases in downtown New York following the 9/11 attacks, citing toxins released in the aftermath.
Her return to broadcasting underscored a broader message: appearances should not deter individuals from prioritizing health or seeking medical care. Goodman, who has hosted *Democracy Now!* for three decades, has previously addressed health challenges, including a 2016 incident where she was hospitalized for complications from a routine medical procedure.
The program also celebrated *Democracy Now!*'s 30th anniversary with a sold-out event at New York’s Riverside Church, featuring notable guests such as Angela Davis, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, and Michael Stipe. Goodman’s update served as a reminder of the importance of health advocacy, public awareness, and resilience in both personal and journalistic contexts.
