Apple Health App Revamp with AI Coach Set for September 2024 Release

Apple is widely expected to unveil significant upgrades to its Health app featuring artificial intelligence capabilities at an upcoming product event in September, potentially alongside the release of new Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 devices. Industry observers point to historical precedent for timing such software announcements, as features like Low Power Mode in watchOS 9, Sleep Apnea detection in watchOS 11, and Hypertension notifications in watchOS 26 were all introduced in September rather than at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

The Health app enhancements, internally codenamed "Project Mulberry," were originally conceived as part of a more comprehensive AI health coaching service before being scaled back to core functionality. These updates will reportedly include improved blood sugar tracking capabilities and a new feature enabling users to monitor workouts using their device's camera. While initially anticipated for iOS 27, the rollout may now occur in a later iOS update such as version 27.1 in October rather than the initial software release.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman previously suggested in his Power On newsletter that Project Mulberry features might not debut at WWDC27, which has since proven accurate. The scaled-back version will integrate health coaching features directly into the existing Health app rather than launching a separate Health+ subscription service featuring doctor-led video content, which had been considered during development.

Key elements confirmed for the upgrade include an AI health coach that provides personalized health recommendations based on data from the Health app, real-time camera-based workout guidance, and a redesigned interface intended to improve data visualization and user comprehension. The exact timing remains uncertain, though Apple's pattern of September software announcements suggests the features could be introduced around the same time as new hardware announcements.

Industry analysts note that while many details remain unconfirmed, the convergence of new hardware and software launches in September makes it a logical timeframe for Apple to introduce these Health app improvements. The company has not yet officially confirmed any of these anticipated features or their release schedule.
