Arturo Ruiz named Brighton women's head coach after Dario Vidosic exit

Brighton & Hove Albion have appointed Arturo Ruiz as the new head coach of their women's team, following the unexpected departure of Dario Vidosic just one week before the start of the new Women's Super League season.

Ruiz, 29, has signed a contract extending until 2029 but will only officially take charge once his work permit is finalized. His arrival comes after Vidosic left the club to pursue a new opportunity, reportedly in the United States. Sources indicate that National Women's Soccer League side Angel City FC is the likely destination for the Australian manager.

Brighton confirmed that Vidosic resigned to "pursue a new opportunity," though no further details were provided about his future role. He had been in charge of the Seagulls since 2024, leading the team to a fifth-place finish in the WSL last season—their highest-ever league position. Under his leadership, Brighton also reached the Women's FA Cup final for the first time in club history, defeating top sides Arsenal and Manchester City along the way.

Ruiz arrives from La Liga club Real Sociedad, where he took over in July 2025. Prior to that, he coached Atlético Madrid, guiding them to third place in Liga F and securing a Women's Champions League spot. He also had a brief stint at Granada CF before moving to San Sebastián. Brighton described him as a coach with a "proven track record of developing teams and individuals" during the recruitment process.

"We are delighted to welcome Arturo to the club," said Zoe Johnson, Brighton's women's and girls' managing director. "He quickly stood out during our recruitment process. We have confidence in his ability to drive this team forward."

Vidosic, who joined Brighton from Melbourne City, leaves after two seasons in which he transformed the club's fortunes. His departure is a significant setback for a team that had been tipped to challenge for a top-four finish this season. Brighton had invested in the squad, signing England international Fran Kirby in April and Switzerland captain Lia Wälti this summer, while also announcing plans for a new £80 million women's stadium.

In a statement, Vidosic expressed gratitude for his time at Brighton: "I have loved my time at Albion and am proud of what we have achieved together. Leaving has been a difficult decision but I believe it is the right time for me and my family to begin a new chapter."

With the new season just days away, Brighton face an immediate challenge in integrating Ruiz into the squad. His coaching style differs from Vidosic's, raising questions about whether the club's recent signings will fit his system. Brighton's opening match against Arsenal on September 6 will now be his first major test.

The club remains optimistic about Ruiz's appointment, though the abrupt managerial change threatens to disrupt their momentum as they aim to build on last season's progress.
