Beat the Heat: Safe Summer Workouts & Pregnancy Exercise Tips
Discover expert advice on staying active during heatwaves and safe pregnancy exercises with tips from top physiologists.

We’ve already experienced two heatwaves this summer, and meteorologists warn that rising temperatures could force even young, healthy adults to adjust their exercise routines. With temperatures climbing, many are left wondering how to stay active when the heat makes even minimal movement feel exhausting.
In response to this growing concern, BBC’s Inside Health explored practical strategies for exercising safely in extreme heat. The episode features insights from Damian Bailey, a physiologist at the University of South Wales, who explains the physiological challenges the body faces when working out in high temperatures. Bailey emphasizes the importance of hydration, timing workouts for cooler parts of the day, and recognizing early signs of heat exhaustion.
The program also examines exercise during pregnancy, a topic highlighted by Calli Hauger-Thackery, who ran the Boston Marathon at 22 weeks pregnant. Joined by physiotherapist Ros Cooke, the segment explores how pregnancy alters the body and which forms of physical activity remain safe. Cooke advises expectant mothers to consult healthcare providers and opt for low-impact exercises like walking or prenatal yoga.
Recovery after exercise is another critical focus. In a lab at the University of Westminster, Dr. Lewis Mattin evaluates the role of electrolytes in rehydration, comparing sports drinks with water. Meanwhile, Ros Cooke discusses active recovery techniques, such as gentle stretching or light walking, versus complete rest, arguing that movement can aid circulation and reduce soreness.
Produced by Gerry Holt and presented by James Gallagher, the episode includes contributions from Hannah Fisher and is edited by Ilan Goodman. Stu Laws served as production coordinator.
