Martinez, who rose to global prominence as Argentina’s goalkeeper during their victorious 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign, returns to London where he began his professional career with Arsenal. After limited first-team opportunities with the Gunners, he embarked on a series of loan spells before joining Aston Villa in 2020. Since then, Martinez has made over 250 appearances for Villa, playing a pivotal role in Unai Emery’s side that clinched the UEFA Europa League title last season.
Chelsea’s new head coach, Xabi Alonso, faces ongoing scrutiny over the club’s defensive stability, particularly in goal. Recent criticism has centered on Robert Sanchez following Chelsea’s opening-day Premier League victory over Fulham, a match that exposed defensive vulnerabilities.
