Congress Ministers Threaten Quit in Vijay Cabinet Over PM Candidate Standoff
Congress ministers in Tamil Nadu's Vijay-led cabinet threaten resignation if Rahul Gandhi isn't named PM candidate for 2029 elections.
Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister S. Rajesh Kumar has issued a warning that he and another Congress minister will resign from the state cabinet led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay if the Tamil Nadu Vikatan Katchi (TVK) does not accept Rahul Gandhi as the prime ministerial candidate for the 2029 parliamentary elections.
Speaking at a party meeting in Marthandam on August 30, 2026, Minister Rajesh Kumar stated that both Congress ministers in the Tamil Nadu government would step down immediately if the TVK continued to promote Vijay as a potential prime minister. "If Mr. Rahul Gandhi is not accepted by the TVK as the prime ministerial candidate for the 2029 parliamentary election, both the Congress ministers in the Tamil Nadu government will resign their posts and leave the cabinet," he said.
Rajesh Kumar emphasized that Congress has been gaining national support due to Rahul Gandhi's opposition to the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He claimed that Gandhi has been widely accepted by voters across India as the party's prime ministerial candidate. "The Congress is gaining popularity among people from all walks of life after Mr. Gandhi's relentless fight against the Narendra Modi-led BJP government and its anarchic, anti-people, and anti-youth policies," he said.
The warning follows recent statements from some TVK leaders and ministers who have suggested Vijay as a potential prime ministerial candidate. The tension reflects broader discussions within Tamil Nadu's political landscape about alliances and leadership ahead of the 2029 elections.
Rajesh Kumar's remarks were met with strong applause from party workers, indicating internal support for Gandhi's leadership within the Congress party in Tamil Nadu. The standoff highlights the challenges of coalition governance when partner parties disagree on major political choices.
