Dan Lawrence’s Unbeaten 50 Drives England to 357-Lead at Lord’s

England’s Joe Root and Dan Lawrence extended their dominance on a rain-interrupted final day at Lord’s as the hosts moved to within one victory of retaining the second Test against New Zealand.

Set a target of 378 to win, England closed their second innings at 177 for seven after tea on the third day, with Lawrence finishing unbeaten on 56. The visitors’ last six wickets added just 42 runs as a succession of showers reduced play to 58.1 overs and prevented a potential declaration. England’s first-innings 332 and New Zealand’s 208 all out left the tourists 129 behind on the first innings, a deficit they never recovered.

Root, who carried his bat through England’s innings with 86 not out, combined with Lawrence for an unbroken stand of 74 to steer the hosts past the follow-on mark and set up a declaration that never came. Root, England’s captain, praised Lawrence’s composure under pressure as the young middle-order batsman saw the side through a testing final session. New Zealand bowled 22 maiden overs during the afternoon session, but the weather window never opened long enough for a concerted chase to develop.

Earlier, Stuart Broad struck twice in three balls to hasten New Zealand’s collapse from 149 for four to 208 all out, wrapping up the tail with successive lbws. England enforced the follow-on for only the second time in 12 years at Lord’s, extending a 1–0 lead in the two-match series.

The next Test starts at Trent Bridge on Friday, with England one win away from regaining the Wisden Trophy after losing it in 2015 and 2019-20. A series victory would give Root his fourth home series win as captain and move England to the top of the World Test Championship standings.
