Drugs worth ₹3,253 crore seized, 26,500 people nabbed in Assam since 2021: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on August 30, 2026, that Assam has made significant strides in combating the drug menace since the launch of the #AssamAgainstDrugs campaign in 2021. According to Sarma, law enforcement agencies have seized narcotics worth over ₹3,253 crore and arrested more than 26,500 individuals involved in the illegal trade.

Speaking on social media, Sarma highlighted that the campaign has been a sustained effort rather than a short-term crackdown. The number of arrests has risen steadily each year, from 4,175 in 2021 to 4,901 in 2025, demonstrating the state’s commitment to eradicating drug trafficking. Assam, which has been governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 2016, has been particularly vulnerable due to its geographic location. The state serves as a key transit route for drugs originating in Myanmar and entering through Mizoram and Manipur before spreading across India.

Sarma emphasized the importance of national coordination in addressing the issue. He credited the central government, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, for strengthening border surveillance, improving intelligence sharing, and deploying advanced technology to intercept drug consignments before they spread further. Without federal support, Sarma noted, Assam alone could not effectively tackle the problem.

The Assam Police have played a crucial role in this effort, working in tandem with national agencies to dismantle drug networks. The campaign reflects a broader strategy to address drug trafficking at both state and national levels, ensuring that both immediate enforcement and long-term prevention measures are in place.

The state’s ongoing battle against narcotics underscores the challenges posed by cross-border smuggling and the need for continuous vigilance and cooperation among law enforcement agencies.
