Dutch Health Institute Issues Red Alert Over Trump-Shaped Ecstasy Pills

Dutch health officials have issued a “red alert” after discovering ecstasy pills shaped like former U.S. President Donald Trump that contain dangerously high levels of PMMA. The Utrecht‑based Trimbos Institute warned that the pills could cause overheating, nausea, heart‑rate spikes and convulsions, with potentially fatal consequences.

The warning follows laboratory tests at Dutch drug‑testing centers in August, where the pills were found to carry a “very high” concentration of para‑methoxymethamphetamine (PMMA), a substance chemically similar to the active ingredient in ecstasy, MDMA. Unlike MDMA, PMMA’s stimulating effects are often absent, the institute explained, which raises the risk of overdose.

The pills carry a stylized image of Trump’s face on one side and the words “Trump” and “NL” stamped on the other. Trimbos released photographs of the tablets—one yellow and blue, the other red and green—to help users identify the dangerous product. The institute urged people to avoid using the pills under any circumstances.

Spokesperson Anniek Groothuis said the institute had not yet received reports of deaths or serious illness linked to the Trump‑shaped tablets. However, she emphasized that the potential for severe health outcomes remains high, especially given the delayed onset of symptoms.

Drug‑addiction and mental‑health research in the Netherlands has long warned that ecstasy remains a popular party drug. A 2024 Dutch government report noted that 550,000 people had used ecstasy at least once in 2022, setting a record for drug use. The report also highlighted the continued prevalence of synthetic analogues such as PMMA.

The Trump‑shaped pills are not the first instance of the former president’s likeness appearing on drug tablets. In 2017, German police seized about 5,000 carrot‑colored ecstasy tablets resembling Trump’s head, allegedly promoted online under the slogan “Trump makes partying great again.”

While the manufacture, sale and use of ecstasy are illegal in the Netherlands, the continued popularity of party drugs underscores the need for public awareness. The Trimbos Institute’s red alert is part of a broader effort to inform the public about emerging drug threats and to reduce accidental overdoses.

Health officials recommend that anyone who suspects they have ingested a suspicious pill seek immediate medical attention. They also advise users to check the appearance of tablets before consumption, as counterfeit pills can carry unknown or dangerous substances.

The red alert highlights the evolving landscape of synthetic drug use and the importance of vigilance by both users and law‑enforcement agencies. By disseminating clear, factual information, the Trimbos Institute aims to protect Dutch citizens from potentially lethal drug variants.
