EFF Clarifies: All Its Images Are Human-Created, Not AI-Generated

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has clarified its policy on image creation for its online content and merchandise, stating that all images are produced by human designers, with rare exceptions.

In a recent statement, the digital rights organization addressed inquiries from supporters questioning whether its blog posts, donation items, or shop images were generated by artificial intelligence (AI). The EFF confirmed that, as a matter of internal policy, its design team exclusively creates visual content for official use.

A spokesperson for the EFF explained that this decision reflects the organization’s commitment to human creativity. The policy applies to all blog banners, promotional materials, and merchandise graphics. The EFF’s design team, though small, adheres to this standard to maintain consistency with the organization’s brand identity and visual style.

To reinforce transparency, the EFF will now include a small credit in the lower right corner of each banner image, reading “Image created by EFF.” This labeling applies to all primary visuals used across the organization’s platforms. In exceptional cases where an AI-generated element is incorporated into a larger illustration—such as a background texture or minor detail—the EFF will disclose this within the image credit, specifying the portion created by AI and naming the tool used.

The EFF emphasized that its stance on AI image generation aligns with its broader advocacy for technological innovation and user rights. The organization supports the development and ethical use of AI tools while maintaining its own creative standards. A representative stated that the decision to rely solely on human-made images reflects the design team’s assessment of what best represents the EFF’s mission and aesthetic.

All images produced by the EFF are released under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-By) license, allowing the public to freely use, share, or adapt them, provided proper credit is given to the EFF. High-resolution versions of these images are available on the organization’s Flickr page, and additional requests can be directed to the EFF via email.

The EFF also noted that donors to the organization receive exclusive human-designed artwork as a thank-you gift, further underscoring its commitment to supporting human creativity in digital spaces.
