Henshaw wins world gold 11 days after being in hospital

Great Britain's Charlotte Henshaw secured her 12th Para-canoe World Championship gold medal in Poznan, Poland, less than two weeks after receiving hospital treatment for a severe bacterial infection. The 39-year-old athlete overcame a serious bout of cellulitis in her leg to win the KL2 200-meter final, finishing more than three seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

The victory marks Henshaw's eighth world title in the KL2 200-meter event, supplementing the four world titles she previously captured in the VL3 classification. Her triumph came despite a complete disruption to her pre-tournament preparation, which left her unable to train on the water in the days leading up to the competition.

Cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection that causes painful inflammation and heat, raised serious doubts over whether the British champion would even be healthy enough to travel to Poland.

Reflecting on her dramatic victory, Henshaw admitted that the triumph carries special significance given the health scare that preceded it. She stated that of all the titles she has managed to win, that one probably means the most because she did not know she was going to be there a week prior. She explained that there is maybe something to be said for taking the pressure off, going out, and trusting her body and experience.

Henshaw noted that having competed at the highest level for a long time allowed her to draw on every bit of experience when preparation gets swept out from underneath her. She added that 11 days before the race, she did not think she would be on the plane, making her title retention particularly meaningful.

Prior to her victory, the double leg amputee shared a reflective update on social media regarding her health challenges. She stated that the past week put things into perspective, noting that while it is easy to get caught up in results, rankings, times, and expectations, those things seem much less important when long-term limb health becomes the priority.

Henshaw transitioned to Para-canoeing in 2017 following a successful career in Para-swimming. Since making the switch, she has established herself as one of the sport's most dominant figures, accumulating three Paralympic gold medals alongside her extensive collection of world titles.

The British team enjoyed broader success in Poznan alongside Henshaw's gold medal performance. Team-mate Hope Gordon won gold in the women's KL3 200-meter final, earning her first world title in that specific event after previously winning two world titles in the VL3 category. Gordon arrived at the championships shortly after representing Scotland in Para-powerlifting at the Commonwealth Games.

Additionally, British paddler Stuart Wood earned a bronze medal in the men's VL3 event, contributing to a strong overall showing for the Great Britain squad at the global championships.
