Hong Kong Fisherman Dies After Suspected Lightning Strike Off Tseung Kwan O

A 67-year-old Hong Kong fisherman died on Thursday after his small wooden boat, a sampan, was reportedly struck by lightning off the coast of Tseung Kwan O during a severe thunderstorm. The incident occurred as Hong Kong was under a red rainstorm warning, highlighting ongoing safety concerns during extreme weather in the city.

The man, identified only by the surname Sin, was found unconscious on his sampan near the Tseung Kwan O Cross Bay Link around 9:14 a.m. Emergency responders located the vessel using a nearby fishing boat’s footage, which showed the sampan drifting during heavy rain before a marine police vessel arrived to conduct a rescue. Authorities reported that Sin had sustained multiple injuries consistent with a lightning strike. He was rushed to shore at the Tseung Kwan O South Landing Steps, where he was pronounced dead at the hospital. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

The Hong Kong Observatory issued a red rainstorm warning at 5:05 a.m. Thursday, which was later downgraded to amber at 9:20 a.m. and fully lifted by 10:15 a.m. During this period, weather services recorded over 5,000 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes across the city. The incident adds to recent safety concerns after a 59-year-old hiker was struck by lightning on Lantau Island in June while climbing its highest peak during another storm.

Police confirmed that Sin’s sampan was operating in hazardous conditions, with the red warning in effect when the incident took place. The Marine Department and Hong Kong Observatory continue to monitor weather patterns to advise local fishermen and maritime workers. Lightning strikes remain a rare but potentially fatal risk during heavy rainstorms in Hong Kong’s coastal and hilly regions.

The case raises questions about safety measures for small vessel operators during severe weather, especially as climate patterns in the region become more unpredictable.
