Hong Kong’s first Chinese medicine hospital to offer inpatient services from December

Hong Kong’s first Chinese medicine hospital will begin offering inpatient services in December, marking a significant expansion of traditional medical care in the city. The Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong, located in Tseung Kwan O, will launch 24-hour inpatient care on December 11, according to authorities. The facility, which opened last December, has previously only provided outpatient and day-patient services.

The hospital will initially offer 93 beds, including 60 government-subsidised beds for eligible residents and 33 non-subsidised beds. An additional 20 beds will be available at the Clinical Trial and Research Centre, with two high-dependency beds for patients needing closer monitoring. By the end of 2030, the total number of beds is expected to reach 400.

Operating under a public-private partnership, the hospital is managed by a company established by Hong Kong Baptist University, which was selected as the project contractor in 2021 following a government tender. Two fee structures are in place: one for subsidised services and another for higher-cost market-oriented services.

Inpatient fees under the subsidised scheme start at HK$980 per day, more than three times the HK$300 day charge for a public hospital bed. Non-subsidised beds range from HK$810 to HK$3,100 per day, depending on room type, excluding additional costs for medical consultations, which begin at HK$560 per visit.

Alongside inpatient services, the hospital will expand its outpatient offerings, including radiological diagnostics and pathology departments. Ten new special disease programmes, covering conditions such as eczema, Parkinson’s disease, and functional gastrointestinal disorders, will be introduced in September and November.

Authorities anticipate that annual outpatient attendance will increase from 140,000 in the first year to over 260,000 in the second year. The hospital aims to integrate Chinese and Western medicine to enhance clinical outcomes, as stated by the government.
