How Dolly Parton helped the world - from children's books to supporting Covid vaccine

Following the announcement of Dolly Parton's death, her team requested that fans donate to her flagship charity, the Imagination Library, in lieu of flowers. The request highlights a legacy defined not only by her music career, but also by decades of global philanthropic work focused on childhood literacy, medical research, and disaster relief.

Parton established the non-profit Dollywood Foundation in 1988 to bolster education, launching the Imagination Library in 1995 alongside her father, Robert Lee Parton. Inspired by her father's inability to read or write, the organization mails free books monthly to children under five years old. Originally created for children in Sevier County, Tennessee, the program expanded internationally to Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia. To date, the program has distributed more than 332.4 million books, donating its 100 millionth book to the Library of Congress in 2018.

Parton's charitable contributions also significantly impacted global healthcare. In 2020, she donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, helping fund early-stage trials for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, which offered nearly 95% protection against severe illness. Over the years, she contributed millions more to medical research and pediatric care, including multiple $1 million gifts to Nashville's Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital. Earlier this year, the East Tennessee Children's Hospital announced it would be renamed the Dolly Parton Children's Hospital following a partnership with the star.

Throughout her life, Parton maintained a strong commitment to her native East Tennessee. In the early 1990s, she offered a $500 reward to seventh and eighth graders in Sevier County who successfully graduated high school, helping reduce the local dropout rate from 35% to 6%.

During times of crisis, Parton repeatedly organized community relief efforts. Following devastating wildfires in Sevier County in 2016, she hosted a telethon featuring major country music stars that raised over $13 million. The funds provided $1,000 monthly stipends for six months to approximately 900 families who lost their homes. In 2021, she helped raise $700,000 for residents affected by severe flooding in Middle Tennessee.

Her philanthropic efforts extended to environmental conservation and workforce development. Her Dollywood theme park hosted the world's largest sanctuary for non-releasable bald eagles, supporting rehabilitation efforts that contributed to the species being removed from the endangered list in 2007. In 2022, Parton expanded her foundation's educational support by offering to cover 100% of tuition and books for any Dollywood employee furthering their education. That same year, she received the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy.

Reflecting on her philanthropic vision, Parton once expressed hope that she would leave behind something others could use to lift themselves up, stating she could rest in peace knowing she had done her best.
