JF-17 Thunder gains global traction at Dubai Airshow with new procurement MoU

Pakistan’s JF‑17 Thunder fighter jet attracted significant attention at the Dubai Airshow 2025, prompting the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for its procurement. The Inter‑Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced the agreement on Thursday, noting it as another milestone in the country’s expanding defence and industrial partnerships. The MoU was signed with a friendly nation whose identity was not disclosed, but the event underscored growing international interest in Pakistan’s aviation exports.

ISPR highlighted the deal as a testament to the rising global confidence in Pakistan’s aerospace industry. The JF‑17, developed jointly by Pakistan and China, has become a flagship product of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and a key component of the nation’s defence strategy. The procurement agreement is expected to strengthen bilateral ties and provide the partner country with a cost‑effective, multirole fighter platform.

The Dubai Airshow also served as a venue for high‑level talks between Pakistan’s Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, and senior UAE defence officials. Sidhu met Lieutenant General Pilot Ibrahim Nasser Al‑Alawi, the UAE Undersecretary of Defence, and Major General Rashid Mohammed Al‑Shamsi, Commander of the UAE Air Force and Air Defence. These meetings aimed to deepen cooperation in advanced training, emerging aerospace technologies, and operational coordination.

UAE military leadership praised the PAF’s modernization initiatives and its growing indigenous capabilities. The UAE delegation noted Pakistan’s progress in developing advanced avionics, weapon systems, and maintenance infrastructure, which could serve as a model for other regional partners.

The PAF’s contingent at the Dubai Airshow included the latest JF‑17 Thunder Block‑III and the Super Mushshak trainer aircraft. The Block‑III variant features upgraded radar, electronic warfare suites, and a modern cockpit, making it a versatile platform for air superiority, ground attack, and training missions. The Super Mushshak, a lightweight trainer, has been used extensively for pilot conversion and basic flight training.

The operational performance of the JF‑17 Block‑III in Pakistan’s “Marka‑e‑Haq” operation—a response to Indian aggression in May—has reinforced its reputation as a highly capable and cost‑effective multirole fighter. During the operation, the JF‑17 was employed to strike strategic targets, demonstrating its precision strike capability and low operational cost compared to foreign alternatives.

In the broader context of the India‑Pakistan conflict, the JF‑17 was reportedly used in the Adampur engagement, where Pakistan claimed it destroyed an Indian S‑400 air defence system using hypersonic missiles. The aircraft also reportedly downed multiple Indian fighter jets and struck over 20 Indian military sites in response to Indian missile strikes on Pakistani territory. These actions have been a point of contention, with India claiming the strikes targeted “terrorist” positions following the Pahalgam incident, while Pakistan has cited self‑defence and retaliation for civilian casualties.

The procurement MoU and the high‑level dialogues at the Dubai Airshow signal a strengthening of Pakistan’s defence diplomacy and a willingness to share its indigenous technology with allied nations. For the UAE, the partnership offers an opportunity to diversify its defence portfolio and gain access to a proven, affordable fighter platform. The JF‑17’s growing presence on the global stage may also encourage other countries to consider Pakistani‑made aircraft for their air forces.
