Kacey Musgraves: How Country-Pop Crossover Shaped Modern Americana
Explore Kacey Musgraves' evolution from country artist to pop crossover icon, winning Grammys and redefining Americana with albums like 'Golden Hour'.
New York City's late-summer cultural calendar is packed with major live performances, outdoor film screenings, new theatrical productions, and cinematic releases. Heading the lineup is Texas singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves, who brings her national tour to Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, marking a high point in a diverse late-season arts schedule across the metropolitan area.
Musgraves takes the stage at Madison Square Garden on August 31 and September 1. Her concerts highlight a discography that ranges from her 2018 Grammy Award-winning album Golden Hour and the 2024 release Deeper Well to her recent project Middle of Nowhere, which incorporates traditional Western swing, bluegrass, and regional Mexican musical styles.
Concertgoers in New York can also attend the conclusion of the City Parks Foundation SummerStage series at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park on September 2. Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist Samara Joy joins bassist and bandleader Christian McBride to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Verve Records. The performance pays tribute to the historic 1964 bossa nova album Getz/Gilberto by João Gilberto and Stan Getz, with supporting music led by Mei Semones.
Classical arts and dance feature prominently in early September's public programming. The Metropolitan Opera is hosting its annual HD Festival at Lincoln Center's Josie Robertson Plaza from September 2 through September 7. The free outdoor event features recorded broadcasts of major works, including Gabriela Lena Frank's El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego, Bellini's bel-canto opera I Puritani, and a two-part screening of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde.
Downtown at Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Park, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company presents Curriculum IV: Spin and Spin! Turn! Turn! Turn! as the closing performance of the River to River Festival. Running September 10 and September 12 through September 13, the free dance work features a live score by Samora Pinderhughes based on Nina Simone's recording of Turn! Turn! Turn!
Off-Broadway theatrical offerings include Andrew Stein's new drama Disruption, playing at the Pershing Square Signature Center through October 4. Directed around themes of artificial intelligence, the play stars John David Washington as a tech entrepreneur selling a personal decision-making algorithm to his friends, co-starring Irene Sofia Lucio and Jason Ralph.
In film, director Rafael Manuel debuts his feature Filipiñana at Film Forum on August 28 ahead of its national release on September 4. Set at a golf resort near Manila, the film examines class conflict and labor exploitation through the eyes of female resort workers. In wide release, director Ridley Scott's sci-fi drama The Dog Stars follows survivors played by Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce, and Margaret Qualley navigating a post-pandemic landscape in Colorado.
