Life as a WAG: The sacrifices behind football's transfer window chaos

Life for Jessica Beaumont has revolved around uncertainty since partner Owen Dale began his football career. As the wife of a professional footballer navigating loans and transfers, she has moved five times in five years—each relocation tied to Owen’s next club assignment. Their latest move came just days after the birth of their second child, when Owen was loaned to Portsmouth, nearly 220 miles from their new home in Congleton.

The couple had only just moved into their first house together when the January transfer window opened. Jessica had given birth to their son Xavier just days earlier. Owen was on a call with his manager and agent while she was in labour, but as soon as she was discharged, he was sent out on loan. They spent one night in the new house before leaving for Portsmouth. Jessica later resigned from her job as a trainee solicitor and left her family in Stoke-on-Trent.

Loan moves are common in football, especially for young players like Owen, who has played in League One with stints in the Championship. He began his career at Crewe Alexandra, later moving to Blackpool on loan before Blackpool signed him permanently. But he was soon loaned out again. After Portsmouth, he returned to Blackpool, then joined Oxford United, where he helped the club win promotion to the Championship. His most recent loan was to Plymouth Argyle in League One, where he made 28 appearances last season.

Owen is currently a free agent, able to sign with any club without a transfer fee. But with that freedom comes risk. Moves can fall through, clubs can be relegated, and injuries can derail careers. Jessica says the family never assumes stability. They’ve lived in rented homes across the UK, often furnished by clubs, and keep possessions in storage. Even simple milestones like birthdays are hard to plan.

Jessica has adjusted by working remotely in social media and sharing her experiences on TikTok under #wag and #waglife. She acknowledges the sacrifices—quitting her law career, supporting Owen’s ambitions, and managing life under constant change. She says the lifestyle is not as glamorous as it appears, especially outside the Premier League.

“People think being a footballer’s partner means easy living,” she says. “But in League One, there’s no guaranteed income or security. You have to live within your means and be ready for anything.”

The uncertainty also affects their children, four-year-old Xavier and two-month-old Etta. Jessica says planning for Xavier’s school years will add another layer of complexity to their nomadic life.

Despite the challenges, she sees it as a privilege to support Owen’s dream. But she keeps emotional distance from each place they live.

“As much as it’s my life too,” she says, “his career comes first.”
