Liverpool boss Iraola criticizes officials for delayed substitutions vs Forest

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola expressed frustration after his team’s Premier League match against Nottingham Forest ended in a 2-2 draw at Anfield, citing delays in substitutions that disrupted their momentum.

With the score tied at 1-1 in the second half, Iraola attempted to make three changes—bringing on Ryan Gravenberch, Kostas Tsimikas, and Rio Ngumoha. However, fourth official Tim Robinson encountered issues with the substitution board, forcing Liverpool to wait for several minutes. The delay proved costly when Forest capitalized on a quick throw-in following a stoppage, leading to a penalty that gave them a 2-1 lead. Neco Williams was fouled by Alisson as he advanced into the box, though the contact was judged non-aggressive.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Iraola criticized the extended delay, stating, “We had to wait about three minutes. He was having an issue with the board—I don’t know if it wasn’t working—but we definitely wanted to make the subs in the last two or three stoppages before the goal.” He added that the delay, combined with other factors, contributed to the team’s difficulties in regaining control of the match.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard acknowledged that while the penalty decision was debatable, the frustration over the substitution process was understandable. “In this day and age, with all the technology, it can’t be taking three minutes to make a triple substitution,” he told TNT Sports. Gerrard emphasized that though the issue was minor in the context of the game, it highlighted broader concerns about officiating.

Similarly, ex-Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock criticized the fourth official’s handling of the situation, calling it “appalling” and suggesting it could have altered the game’s flow. “It would’ve completely stopped the play,” Warnock told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Liverpool managed to salvage a point in stoppage time when Victor Munoz scored his first goal for the club, securing a share of the points. The result leaves Liverpool in a mid-table position as they continue their Premier League campaign.
