Longform Podcast #576: Lindsay Peoples

Lindsay Peoples Named Editor-in-Chief of The Cut in April 2024

New York, April 2024 – Lindsay Peoples has been appointed editor-in-chief of *The Cut*, a prominent fashion and culture publication under the *New York Magazine* umbrella. Peoples, who previously served as the publication’s editor, steps into the top editorial role amid ongoing industry discussions about representation and accountability in media leadership.

Peoples, who identifies as Black, has been vocal about the challenges of navigating leadership as a young, visibly diverse professional. In an April 2024 interview with the *Longform Podcast*, she reflected on the pressures of public scrutiny and expectations in a high-profile role.

“I see so many incredible people make one mistake and lose their job or speak out about something and then the next day something blows up,” Peoples said during the interview. “And so I do think that I often feel like I have to be so careful. And that's hard to do because I'm just naturally curious and I want to know and I want to find and explore and do the things. But I'm aware that… people think I'm too young. I'm too Black. I'm aware of all those things and I'm still going to try.”

Her comments underscore broader conversations in media and fashion about the intersection of race, age, and professional credibility. Since assuming the top role, Peoples has emphasized editorial independence and expanded coverage to include more diverse voices in fashion criticism and cultural commentary.

Peoples began her career at *Teen Vogue* and later joined *The Cut* in 2018 as a features editor. She was named editor in 2021, becoming one of the youngest editors-in-chief at a major fashion publication. Under her leadership, *The Cut* has increased its focus on labor issues in fashion, sustainability, and social justice, aligning with growing demands for accountability within the industry.

Peoples’ appointment comes at a time of transition for *New York Magazine*, following a 2023 restructuring that centralized several digital brands under shared leadership. While the company has not publicly detailed changes to *The Cut*’s editorial direction, Peoples has signaled a commitment to investigative journalism and deeper cultural analysis.

In a statement released with her appointment, Peoples said, “I want *The Cut* to be a place where readers see themselves reflected—not just in the fashion we cover, but in the stories we tell about power, identity, and change.” She has not responded to requests for further comment beyond the podcast interview.

As media organizations face increasing pressure to diversify leadership and content, Peoples’ role is being closely watched as a potential model for industry evolution. Her leadership is seen by some observers as a step toward more inclusive decision-making in fashion media, though challenges remain in balancing editorial ambition with institutional expectations.

The *Longform Podcast* interview, posted in April 2024, offers one of the few public insights into Peoples’ perspective during this pivotal moment in her career and at *The Cut*.
