A hobbyist developer has transformed a standard DeWalt planer into a precision instrument by automating its height adjustment with a stepper motor and custom electronics, eliminating repetitive manual cranking during maintenance and enabling repeatable thickness planing.
The project, documented by DendroLabsDev, replaces the planer’s slow-turning adjustment wheel with a high-resolution stepper motor capable of about 1,000 micro-steps per inch. This upgrade allows for fine, consistent control over cutting depth—something typically reserved for high-end industrial planers. The system includes several operational modes: one mimics a human operator by making multiple passes to achieve a target thickness, another uses a touch probe to zero the cutter head, and a third lets users save and recall height settings across different workpieces. Additional features allow for incremental passes at predefined step sizes.
DendroLabsDev chose a DeWalt planer as the base tool due to its wide availability and relatively low cost, making the modification accessible to hobbyists and small workshops. The developer has also indicated plans to release a more polished version, including a printed circuit board (PCB) and enclosure, to make the system easier to replicate. While the project focuses on a DeWalt model, the underlying approach—automating the adjustment wheel—could theoretically be applied to any planer with a rotary control knob.
The modification aligns with a growing trend in the maker community of enhancing traditional woodworking tools with digital controls. Similar DIY projects have included CNC-controlled scroll saws and automated router lifts, reflecting a broader interest in upgrading workshop equipment with open-source electronics.
DendroLabsDev’s planer upgrade demonstrates how modest hardware and open-source firmware can bring professional-level precision to everyday tools. As the developer refines the design and prepares a market-ready version, woodworkers may soon have a cost-effective way to automate one of the most tedious aspects of planer operation.
