NASA Launches Nancy Grace Roman Telescope to Unlock Universe's Mysteries
NASA's new Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope lifts off from Florida to study dark energy, exoplanets, and cosmic mysteries with unprecedented precision and scope.

NASA successfully launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on Sunday, marking a major milestone in the agency’s mission to explore the universe’s deepest mysteries. The powerful observatory lifted off from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, beginning a 100-day journey to its designated orbit nearly one million miles from Earth. Once operational, the Roman telescope will conduct groundbreaking surveys of the cosmos, focusing on dark energy, exoplanets, and the expansion of the universe.
Named in honor of Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief astronomer and a pioneering figure in space science, the telescope is designed to revolutionize our understanding of the universe. With a field of view at least 100 times wider than the Hubble Space Telescope, it will capture vast panoramic images of the cosmos. Scientists expect Roman to discover tens of thousands of new exoplanets, including potentially habitable worlds, while also investigating dark matter and dark energy—two of the universe’s most elusive components.
"Roman is going to change the way we look at the universe," said Nicky Fox, NASA’s associate administrator for science missions, during a post-launch briefing. "It is going to discover tens of thousands, maybe even 100,000 new exoplanets." The telescope will also study black holes, map billions of galaxies, and examine objects within our solar system. Its five-year primary mission could extend to a decade, providing long-term data for researchers.
Dark energy and dark matter remain among the biggest unsolved puzzles in astrophysics. Together, they are believed to constitute about 95% of the universe, yet their origins and nature remain largely unknown. Dark matter exerts gravitational pull, shaping the cosmos, while dark energy is thought to drive the accelerating expansion of the universe. Roman’s advanced instruments will help scientists unravel these mysteries by analyzing cosmic structures and the behavior of light across vast distances.
The launch marks another success for NASA’s expanding fleet of space telescopes. While the James Webb Space Telescope, launched in 2021, also orbits at a similar distance, Roman’s broader field of view will complement its work. Unlike Hubble, which orbits just 300 miles above Earth, Roman will operate from a stable position near the Lagrange Point 2, allowing uninterrupted observations.
During a congratulatory call to NASA’s team, former President Donald Trump praised the mission, calling it a symbol of American innovation. "You're the hottest in space, and we have the hottest country anywhere in the world," he said. "So let's keep it all going. You're a big part of it."
With its advanced capabilities, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is poised to redefine astronomy, offering new insights into the universe’s composition, evolution, and potential for life beyond Earth.
