New Chinese Ambassador in Australia Takes Bus to Work, Highlights Diplomacy

Chinese Ambassador Liu Jinsong arrived in Australia this week, marking the beginning of his diplomatic posting in Canberra, where he took a public bus from Sydney to immerse himself in local life. In a statement released by the Chinese embassy, Liu expressed both honor and responsibility as he assumes his role amid ongoing efforts to improve strained relations between Beijing and Canberra.

Speaking on his journey to the capital, Liu said he had engaged in conversations with ordinary Australians during his bus ride, calling the experience enjoyable and insightful. His arrival follows a period of diplomatic tension, particularly during the tenure of former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, when China imposed trade restrictions on key Australian exports, including coal, barley, and wine. Tensions were further fueled by Australia’s legislation targeting foreign interference, its exclusion of Huawei from 5G networks, and its call for an independent inquiry into the origins of COVID-19.

Since Prime Minister Anthony Albanese took office in 2022, bilateral relations have shown signs of improvement, with Albanese making two official visits to Beijing. However, challenges remain, including Australia’s recent condemnation of China’s test of a nuclear-capable ballistic missile in the South Pacific, which Canberra described as destabilizing. Despite these concerns, China remains Australia’s top customer for iron ore, while Australia continues to scrutinize Chinese investments in critical sectors such as rare earth minerals.

In his remarks on Monday, Liu emphasized the importance of mutual respect, stating that both nations should acknowledge each other’s core interests and major concerns. He highlighted the lack of historical grievances between the two countries, their complementary economies, and their culturally enriching exchanges. Liu replaces Xiao Qian, a former ambassador known for his outspoken defense of China’s policies in Australia.

Prior to his appointment in Australia, Liu served as head of the foreign ministry’s Department of Asian Affairs, where he played a key role in diplomatic negotiations with Japan during a period of heightened tensions over Taiwan-related statements by Japanese officials.
