Pastor Robert Guanco Killed by Falling Sign at Big Church Festival

Robert Guanco, a pastor at Jesus the Living Water Church in Eastbourne, East Sussex, has been identified as the man killed when a sign fell at the Big Church Festival near Steyning, West Sussex, on Friday. The incident also injured six others, four of whom were hospitalized. The festival, which describes itself as the UK’s largest Christian gathering, was established in 2009 and was scheduled to run from Friday to Sunday before organizers canceled the remaining events.

Guanco, 41, was remembered by his church as a dedicated servant of faith, a loving husband to Isay, and a devoted father to Ellie. In a statement, Jesus the Living Water Church described him as a blessing to many whose lives he touched. Pastor Norman Ponce of Jesus the Living Water Worldwide Church also paid tribute, calling Guanco a faithful servant of God, a loving husband, a great father, and a mentor to many.

The festival took place at Wiston Park and attracted thousands of attendees. Witnesses reported that the heavy sign, which read “Everything’s Unmissable,” collapsed in windy conditions before people rushed to lift it. Emergency services and organizers are investigating the incident. Sussex Police, along with the Health and Safety Executive and local authorities, have been notified and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Eastbourne MP Josh Babarinde, who met with Guanco’s congregation earlier this summer, expressed his condolences. “Their energy and spirit was inspiring,” he said. “This, in so many ways, is a testament to his pastorship and his commitment to his church. I cannot imagine how difficult this must be for his family—I send them and his church my most sincere condolences.”

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah Mullally, also conveyed her shock and sadness. “I pray for his family, friends and loved ones as they grieve,” she said. “I pray for those receiving treatment, and the healthcare workers looking after them. And I pray too for the other festival goers, staff and event organisers as they come to terms with these tragic events.”

Guanco’s church has invited the community to gather at the Sovereign Harbour Community Centre in Eastbourne on Sunday to honor his life and celebrate his daughter’s birthday.
