Patel to be replaced by Tugendhat as shadow foreign secretary

The Conservative Party is set to undergo a significant reshuffle next month, with Tom Tugendhat poised to take over as shadow foreign secretary from Dame Priti Patel. The move, first reported by the Daily Telegraph and confirmed by BBC News, comes as part of a broader leadership team adjustment under party leader Kemi Badenoch.
Dame Priti Patel announced her departure from the role in a social media post, stating she would leave to pursue a new position aimed at "strengthening links with sister parties and centre-right movements around the world." Her exit follows the resignation of shadow housing secretary Sir James Cleverly, who will step down to run for London mayor. The anticipated reshuffle had already been expected due to shadow energy secretary Claire Coutinho’s upcoming maternity leave.
Speculation has swirled in recent weeks about whether Badenoch might replace shadow chancellor Mel Stride, though party insiders have downplayed such rumors. Many within the Conservative Party see Coutinho as a potential future shadow chancellor, given her strong performances in Parliament and media appearances. However, Badenoch is unlikely to appoint her to the role while she is on leave.
Tugendhat, a former Conservative leadership candidate, will return to the front bench as part of Badenoch’s reshuffle. His appointment reflects Badenoch’s efforts to rejuvenate the party’s leadership team ahead of the next general election.
The reshuffle follows a period of internal party adjustments and strategic repositioning as the Conservatives seek to regain momentum in public opinion polls.
