Plateau Police Arrest Female Students Over Viral Assault Video

The Plateau State Police Command has arrested several female students in connection with a viral video showing an alleged assault on another student in Pankshin Local Government Area. The incident, which has drawn widespread public attention, prompted swift action from police authorities after the video circulated on social media platforms. The suspects, identified as students of the Federal University of Education, Pankshin, are now in police custody as investigations continue.

In a statement issued on Friday in Jos, the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Alfred Alabo, confirmed the arrests and outlined the next steps in the investigation. He stated that the Commissioner of Police, Ayodeji Faniyan, had directed the Pankshin Area Commander to immediately launch an inquiry and apprehend those responsible. “Immediately the CP got wind of it, he directed the Area Commander in Paskshin Local Government Council to act immediately, which they have done,” Alabo said.

Following preliminary investigations, the arrested students will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Jos. After the conclusion of the investigation, they are expected to be charged in court. Alabo emphasized that the suspects could face additional charges beyond assault, including cybercrime-related offenses, as recording and sharing violent acts on social media is also a criminal act under Nigerian law.

“In the process of committing this crime, sometimes you will commit several other crimes,” Alabo explained. “It is not just you beating somebody or meting violence against your fellow human being; even having the mind to record it is cybercrime.” He strongly condemned the alleged assault, labeling it as a form of jungle justice and violence, both of which constitute criminal offenses.

The police spokesperson urged young people and residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands, regardless of the circumstances. He advised them to report disputes to authorized authorities who can provide fair and legal resolutions. Alabo also called on the public to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could help prevent escalation of conflicts.

He reiterated the commitment of the police to ensure justice is served, stating that the suspects will be prosecuted once investigations are complete. “Stay clear of jungle justice. Report cases anytime you are aggrieved to the right and appropriate authority,” he advised.

The Federal University of Education, Pankshin, is located in Plateau State and serves as an important institution for teacher education in the region. The university community and the broader public are closely monitoring the situation as legal proceedings unfold.
