Police Break Into Vancouver Gallery After Confusing Sculpture for Person

VANCOUVER — Emergency personnel forced entry into a downtown Vancouver art gallery late last week after a 911 caller mistook a sculpture for a person in distress.

Police responded to Access Gallery around 10:30 p.m. on August 14 following a report of a possible medical emergency. According to a Vancouver Police Department spokesperson, a witness called 911 claiming to see “a person’s feet protruding from behind a counter” and believed immediate medical assistance was required.

Officers arrived at the gallery, located in the 500 block of Richards Street, and forced entry after discovering the front door locked. Inside, they found no person in need of help. The sculpture in question, titled “Untitled (the preparator)” (2024) by artist Allysa Pierre, depicts a preparator in a crouched position behind the gallery’s front desk, its feet visible from the entrance.

The Vancouver Police Department confirmed the incident was a false alarm and no injuries were reported. A spokeswoman stated that officers “responded appropriately given the information provided by the caller.”

While the initial call suggested a medical emergency, speculation arose online that the witness may have confused the sculpture with someone experiencing an overdose, a common sight in Vancouver amid the ongoing opioid crisis. Health officials have previously reported over 800 overdose deaths in the city in 2023 alone.

Access Gallery now faces a repair bill of approximately 1,000 Canadian dollars (~722 USD) following the forced entry. The gallery has not publicly commented on the incident.

The Vancouver Police Department reminded the public that 911 calls should be used only for genuine emergencies and that false reports can divert critical resources from those in real need. The department did not disclose whether any follow-up action was taken regarding the caller.

This incident highlights the challenges emergency responders face in urban centers dealing with overlapping public health and safety concerns, including the opioid crisis and urban density.
