Political Outrage Over Shocking Sleeper Bus Gang-Rape in Greater Noida

A 16‑year‑old girl from Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri was gang‑raped on a moving sleeper bus between Greater Noida and Delhi on August 4, 2024, police said. The accused driver and conductor were arrested after the victim was abandoned at Delhi’s Kashmere Gate. He described the victim’s journey from Pari Chowk to Kashmere Gate and called out the government’s handling of sexual harassment cases in the capital.

BJP Member of Parliament Navneet Rana also condemned the gang‑rape, describing it as “disheartening.” She demanded swift justice, calling for a “straightforward process” and even suggested public execution for the accused. Rana criticized the lack of timely police action and urged the authorities to prevent such crimes from recurring.

The victim’s family has not yet released a statement, but local activists have called for stricter bus safety protocols, including mandatory CCTV monitoring and passenger verification. Law‑enforcement officials said they would review security measures on sleeper buses operating in the NCR and consider stricter penalties for offenders.

The case has reignited debate over women’s safety on public transport, with civil society groups demanding better policing, increased surveillance, and clearer accountability for police officers who fail to act on reports of sexual violence. The Delhi Police has pledged to investigate the incident thoroughly and to cooperate with the Uttar Pradesh police in bringing the accused to justice.
