PARIS — The contest to lead France’s Socialist Party (PS) into the 2026 legislative elections is tightening, with Raphaël Glucksmann positioned as the clear frontrunner while outgoing leader Olivier Faure maneuvers to reclaim influence. The internal vote, scheduled for October 2025, pits Europe-oriented reformers against party traditionalists in a high-stakes battle for the party’s future direction.

Glucksmann, a 44-year-old MEP from Strasbourg and co-founder of the pro-European Place publique movement, has surged to the top of opinion polls by advocating a bold green-and-social justice platform. His campaign emphasizes climate action, workers’ rights, and closer EU integration, appealing to younger and urban voters disillusioned with the party’s past electoral underperformance. Polling by IFOP in late July 2025 shows Glucksmann leading with 38 percent support among PS members, 15 points ahead of his nearest rival.

Behind him, Olivier Faure, the outgoing first secretary who led the PS from 2018 to 2023, remains a formidable force. Faure, 57, has re-emerged as a vocal critic of Glucksmann’s strategy, warning that it risks diluting the party’s socialist identity. “We cannot become a French version of the Greens,” Faure told reporters in late July. “Socialism means protecting workers, not just the planet.” His supporters argue that only a return to core left-wing values can revive the party’s fading relevance after years of poor showings in national elections.

The primary is seen as a referendum on the PS’s direction following a decade of decline. The party, once France’s dominant left force, now holds just 26 seats in the National Assembly and saw its presidential candidate, Anne Hidalgo, finish sixth in the 2022 race with 1.75 percent of the vote. Glucksmann’s rise reflects a broader shift within the French left toward pragmatic, European-aligned progressivism, while Faure’s resistance underscores the enduring influence of traditional labor and welfare-state politics.

Campaigning officially began on August 1, 2025, with televised debates scheduled for September. The winner will face far-right leader Jordan Bardella and centrist President Emmanuel Macron in the 2026 legislative showdown. Analysts say the PS primary outcome could determine whether the party regains relevance or risks further marginalization.

Elsewhere in North Africa, French journalist Christophe Gleizes remains detained in Algeria. Gleizes, a correspondent for Society and So Foot magazines, was arrested in June 2025 during a reporting assignment. His detention has drawn international criticism and renewed calls from media rights groups for his immediate release.
