Punjabi Influencer Manjit Kaur Dies After Brutal Assault, Probe Underway

Punjabi social media influencer Manjit Kaur died on August 26 at a government hospital in Chandigarh, nearly two months after she was allegedly assaulted and set on fire by two acquaintances. The 28-year-old succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), police confirmed on August 29.

According to a complaint filed by Kaur’s mother, she was allegedly kidnapped on July 3 by Shubhi and Pinda, who lured her near a liquor shop in Sector 34, Chandigarh. The two acquaintances allegedly took her to Morinda in Punjab, where she was subjected to assault, tied to a tree, and set on fire. A friend intervened, extinguished the flames with a blanket, and rushed her to a hospital in Morinda before she was later transferred to a private hospital in Mohali and eventually to PGIMER.

Kaur’s mother claimed that her daughter regained consciousness on August 5 and requested that the Kharar police in Mohali record her statement, but no officers arrived. Police, however, stated they fully cooperated with the family throughout the investigation.

A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections 103(1) for murder and 140(1) for kidnapping, police said. Chandigarh Deputy Superintendent of Police (South) Gurjeet Kaur confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts underway to locate the assailants.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence to identify those responsible and determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged kidnapping. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Before her death, Manjit Kaur had gained popularity on Instagram with around 1.46 lakh followers, where she posted videos featuring Punjabi and Haryanvi songs.
