RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat's Times Square Billboard Sparks Controversy Ahead of NYC Event

A large billboard featuring Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat appeared in New York’s Times Square on Friday, just hours before he was scheduled to speak at the ‘Universal Oneness Celebrations’ in Manhattan. Video footage shared by Press Trust of India showed Bhagwat’s image prominently displayed at the iconic location ahead of the August 29 event, which is being organized by the American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD) at Madison Square Garden. The visual promotion comes as Bhagwat continues a three-nation tour of the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom during the RSS’ centenary year.

Bhagwat arrived in New York on Tuesday as part of his outreach program. On Friday morning, he visited the ISKCON temple at 26 Second Avenue, where he placed a garland on a deity image and participated in a food distribution initiative for homeless individuals. Gauranga Das, a governing body commissioner of ISKCON, noted that the temple holds historical significance as the place where Srila Prabhupada founded the organization in 1966.

The upcoming event at Madison Square Garden, scheduled from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm local time, will feature cultural performances, music, and artistic presentations. Organizers describe the program as a celebration of unity across communities and nations, drawing on the Sanskrit concept Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning “the world is one family.”

However, the event has sparked significant controversy. More than 200 Hindu American organizations have publicly supported the program, according to organizers. In contrast, groups including Hindus for Human Rights have announced a protest outside Madison Square Garden on Saturday. A coalition of 61 interfaith and secular organizations has signed an open letter opposing the event, arguing that the RSS promotes an exclusionary ideology.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has also publicly criticized the event. He described the RSS as a movement with an “exclusionary vision” and stated that city authorities lack the legal authority to block a privately organized event. Organizers have defended the program as a platform for dialogue and unity.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has weighed in on the debate. USCIRF Chair Asif Mahmood initially called on Washington to consider targeted sanctions against RSS members and revoke Bhagwat’s visa. He later said he would be open to meeting with Bhagwat for discussion. In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs labeled the commission as “biased” and accused it of making repeated “incorrect and provocative statements” about the country.

As the event approaches, public attention remains focused on Bhagwat’s visit and the broader implications of his presence in New York.
