Russian Drone Strike on Kiev Ammo Depot Kills 37, Sparks Evacuations

A Russian drone strike on an ammunition depot in the village of Myla, just west of Kyiv, has killed at least 37 people and injured dozens more, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack triggered hours of secondary explosions, damaging around 50 residential buildings and a care home for the elderly and disabled. The local community leader was among the dead after rushing to assist. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the storage of military explosives near civilian homes as "terrible negligence," while prosecutors in Kyiv opened a criminal investigation into the depot’s legality.

The strike occurred during a multi-day Russian campaign involving jet-powered drones and missiles, which has kept Kyiv under near-continuous air-raid alerts. Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotskyi reported that roughly 90% of the food-logistics infrastructure used by major retail chains—including distribution centers for Fora, Silpo, NOVUS, and Varus—has been destroyed. While Vysotskyi assured that this would not lead to famine, as retailers shift to direct-from-producer deliveries, stores in Kyiv are already reporting empty shelves for produce, dairy, and staples. The last operating Epicentr hypermarket in Zaporizhzhia was also struck earlier Friday.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed the Myla depot contained components and launch boosters for long-range drones and targeted Flamingo cruise-missile related facilities in the Kyiv region, as well as ports in Mykolaiv and Izmail. Social media claims about Patriot missile storage at the site remain unconfirmed by Ukrainian authorities. This follows a July strike on a depot in nearby Vyshneve, which also resulted in secondary blasts and fatalities, leading to the detention of defense-company executives.

Both sides have increasingly targeted each other’s logistics and dual-use commercial infrastructure. Ukraine has conducted long-range strikes on Russian refineries, energy sites, and online-retailer warehouses, while Russia has focused on disrupting Ukraine’s food supply chain. Kyiv’s air defenses, constrained by a shortage of Patriot interceptors—the only system reliably capable of stopping ballistic missiles—have struggled to counter the new threat of jet-powered drones.

As winter approaches, the immediate consequences are clear: another poorly placed ammunition depot causing civilian casualties, a near-collapse of retail food logistics, and the looming threat of food shortages. The investigation into the depot’s storage practices will provide some answers, but the broader impact on Ukraine’s supply chains and civilian safety remains dire.
